Indigenous Reserve

Volunteering

The BioItzá reserve was created in 1991, as an initiative by a group of Itzán elders with objective of rescuing the culture and its relation with nature. The reserve is located 24 km to the northeast of San José, Petén and has an extension of 36 km˛, equivalent to 3,600 hectares of humid subtropical rain forest. The rich fauna of the BioItzá Reserve is comprised of 73 species of birds, 53 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 44 species of mammals. The association is implementing a program of ecotourism, integrating the tourist activities of the Medical Plant garden with many activities in the Reserve.
Conservation in this area constitutes one of the main reasons that the Association exists. The reserve contains the outskirts of the Mayan civilization in unexcavated sites, such as El Guineo, El Limón, El Caldero and Zocotzal.
