We ask students who wish to stay with host families to keep in mind that the standard of living in Guatemala is much different from that in North American and Western Europe. Guatemalan houses are often very simple and bare, and many families divide one large room into several sleeping quarters using high plywood walls, which limits privacy.
Although students should not expect living conditions to be the same as at their home, they can certainly anticipate a warm welcome from their families. In fact, in general, people here are very open, caring, and interested in cultural exchange. Because most locals cannot afford to travel, they are very curious about life abroad and are excited to house foreigner students!
Please remember that, regardless of living standards, staying with a host family is an enriching and unforgettable experience.
