Volunteering
Hands in Action is a nonprofit community organization. It is located in Barrio Vista Hermosa in San Benito, which is just a short tuk-tuk ride from Flores. Hands in Action’s mission is to be a financially self-sustaining organization focused on community development and positive social change. The organization works to support single mothers who are victims of domestic violence or are financially unable to support themselves, hosts an after-school program for more than 40 area children, and holds various public health events for local residents including infant care classes and free monthly medical clinics.
The after-school program currently includes English classes, weekly agriculture days, health seminars, cultural events, and educational field trips to museums, national parks and other locations. The main goals are to provide a positive alternative environment for the Vista Hermosa children, to be a source of hope and inspiration and to expand their outlooks and opportunities. Through working side by side with other children, members of the community, and volunteers from all around the world, the children learn not only about other cultures and opportunities they could have never imagined, but also about the needs of their own community and the importance of helping others and sharing what they learn.
How can you put your hands in action?
The after-school program is a perfect volunteer opportunity for those who finish with studies in the mornings and have free time in the afternoons. Whether you enjoy getting your hands dirty in the garden, sharing your knowledge of English and other languages or have some health or hygiene knowledge you would like to pass along, everyone is welcome! Even if you just want to spend some time playing fútbol with the kids, any time you have to give will be greatly appreciated.
If you have training in the health field or in a certain skill area, you could help at one of our medical days or lead a workshop with a group of single mothers on a household or vocational skill.
No matter what your interests or skills, you have something to add to Hands in Action - even just sharing your culture and your experiences. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know the local community and practice your Spanish while helping some truly amazing women and children.
